Beautiful Discord
… Life, perfectly flawed
I’ve been drawing all my life, but after 9/11 I stopped trying to make great drawings to prove my drafting prowess and started drawing in celebration of the beauty I saw in humanity and nature. I was compelled to tell the story of how and why what looks like discord is actually in accord, and so so beautiful if you just take a step back. We all smile when we are happy, we frown and slouch when we are sad, cry when we are distraught, raise our chests when proud; love our children, mourn our dead etc. We all breathe the air, drink the water, eat the natural world and work hard to make ample shelter. Being different colors, shapes, and sizes is what makes life beautiful and is not up to us. My intention for this feed is to take you on a journey starting in the year 2000 up to my present day drawings.

Isn't he fun!? I saw him in the Bronx Zoo... Lions and tigers and bears everywhere and I paint a goldfish... but he’s got character... he is from the Bronx.

His eyes... It was like looking into outer space... I couldn't look away. He had no reaction... and to be honest he seemed empty... and lost. This is not a happy story.

The space between us is alive. New Yorkers know this in their heart. That’s what makes one a New Yorker. Connection to something larger than yourself and loss of the illusion of “otherness.” A flowing current of sounds, smells, sights and emotions. Like synapses of a brain, each of us has a little idea on its way to do its thing. Sharing our lives in the closeness of the subways is a hopeful story of peace amongst all differences.

I hope you know I love you when I say this; 9/11 is not a special day, except for those who lost special loved ones. It was just another day that we collided. Another day that war was someone’s answer. I am a man without a country and most New Yorkers and inhabitants of other multi National cities are. We know that most people just want love and anybody of any race is somewhat an asshole, in our own special way. We admire and celebrate each other’s religious holidays and revel in the variety of all the foods, art and fashion we share. Yes, I feel pain and anger about 9/11 too, but no more or less than the pain of knowing about war anywhere else. I can’t find the end of it. We can’t find the first war that brought all wars and pain that passes down through family lines. I do know that we can heal it. If you feel compelled to action because of the death and destruction you witnessed on 9/11 may I suggest an act of love toward the person that it is hardest for you to love. Maybe even a person you hate.
