COMMISSIONS
Close your eyes and remember the best day of your life; your family and friends that were there, the time of day, the weather, the smells in the air, voices, music, flavors and feelings. You can recall a dream, remember a person who has passed or imagine your ideal future and Anthony will paint it for you. His paintings are precious, using time tested Flemish techniques and intended to be an heirloom. Your oil painting will carry your story as it is passed down from generation to generation.
You meet with Anthony 1 to 3 times * to envision and draft your composition. Anyone you trust can join the process. You tell your story and describe your vision while Anthony draws or paints.

We are made of water and elements swirling as an electric symbiotic entanglement composed of trillions of microorganisms. Anthony sees and paints you as a swirling illuminated universe. His portrait sometimes has a likeness to the person, but can also be very abstract and synesthetic. The experience is sometimes revealing and always pleasant.

This is one of my favorite paintings of the Prospect Park Drum Circle in Brooklyn. I’ve painted several “Drum Circle'“ plein-air pieces. This day there was a wedding celebration. I painted it during the ceremony and celebration. The fella in front of the tree was hilariously drunk demanded to be in the painting. He had plastic cherries attached to his cap.

Red Hook, Brooklyn’s iconic bar Sunny’s at sunset. This was a place of healing for me after my father passed. I would not have survived without the people, the music, Sunny himself and his brilliant wife Tune. A genuine smile and a hug from a friend goes a long way.

The space between us is alive. New Yorkers know this in their heart. That’s what makes one a New Yorker. Connection to something larger than yourself and loss of the illusion of “otherness.” A flowing current of sounds, smells, sights and emotions. Like synapses of a brain, each of us has a little idea on its way to do its thing. Sharing our lives in the closeness of the subways is a hopeful story of peace amongst all differences.

I hope you know I love you when I say this: 9/11 wasn't a special day, except to those who lost someone irreplaceable. It was just another day humanity collided with itself — another day war was somebody's answer. I've lived my whole life in New York, a city of people from everywhere, belonging fully to nowhere and everywhere at once. And what I've learned here is simple: almost everyone just wants to love and be loved. We trade holidays, food, art, language, across every line that's supposed to divide us — because underneath the noise, we're not so different.
So yes, I feel the pain and anger of 9/11. But I don't feel it as more sacred than the pain of any other war, anywhere, at any time. I can't find where it started, or who to blame. None of us can find the first wound that passed its grief down through every family since. What I do believe is that it can be healed. Not undone. Healed.
If 9/11 moves you to do something, here's what I'd suggest: don't answer it with more collision. Find the person hardest for you to love — maybe someone you hate — and do something for them anyway. That's where the healing starts.

The sun travels through the universe like a comet, the planets follow in rotation. In my larger composition this child’s ship rides the braided wake of the spinning solar system inside the body of a whale. The child is humanity, the ship is earth. Does the solar system have skin we can’t see yet? Does the sun know where it’s going?
